Orange NSW

Stepping up a notch

I remember feeling utterly disappointed as a buyer in Burgundy a couple of years ago, when one Chardonnay wine after another failed to impress me, in quality, and even more so, in price. Yes, there were beauties to be had (at a price), but I ended up leaving empty handed (work wise). Then, as now, I felt that Australia was probably producing, overall, the best Chardonnay in the world, and that it was often of extremely good value, too.

Just like Shiraz, exploring Chardonnay is a great way to learn and start to understand the Australian wine landscape, as both varieties are planted in almost every corner of the continent. Amongst notable regions, Orange stands tall, and should be in every Chardonnay lovers shopping basket.

The Handpicked wines of Cooks Lot offer extra finesse compared to their regional counterparts. The '3' Chardonnay offers subtle but complex barrel ferment aromas pineapple and grapefruit notes. It's not a weighty wine, but rather elegant and finely textured with citrus and almond notes and understated French oak.

Technically speaking: hand picked, whole bunch, free run juice, wild barrel fermented with partial solids, extended lees contact, barrel stirring, malolactic fermentation and ageing in French oak puncheons for 12 months.

Current available vintage is the 2015.
