Nah – Australian.
Well, with a slight accent, perhaps!
James says: Layered. Seductive. Blackberry. Plum.
We say: Like a nice big hug. A lovely, reasonably full-bodied Shiraz of single vineyard origin that benefits greatly from air – a decanter really does this wine wonders, unless you were planning to open it ten years from now. Elegant. Great wine to have by the glass, 48-72 hrs, no problems, just gets better with air. (NB. Full-bodied – a lot of Australian Shiraz wines are overweight in our books. This one is just right.)
Current available vintage is the 2015.
It's easy to forget when working in the wine 'trade' how much some people like Shiraz. Absolutely love it.
And so do we. Not the jammy ones. Nor the dusty ones. I'm looking for fruit purity, whether barrel fermented or barrel matured, or both, an whatever other choices were made along the way.
Offer a Shiraz with a twist – a great New South Wales Shiraz. The Hilltops region is finally starting get recognition for its ability to combine high altitude freshness with the ripeness that can be achieved during long cool Autumn days, without having to dip into sweetest of the jam jars. Bit of cedar here as a reminder of its timber buddies, but above all, gorgeous, layered and fresh fruit.
